Birdsey’s Plain Stepney Baptist Church, a two-story Greek Revival-style church, was built in 1848 under the direction of Hanford Hull, a noted joiner. Its congregation was formed by the unification of the Stepney Baptist and the Monroe Baptist Societies, and the church was identical to the Methodist Church across the Stepney Green. The associated parsonage, built about 1845 in conjunction with the Baptist meetinghouse or church in the Greek Revival style, was first occupied in 1840 by pastor James Mallory.
