Monroe County's ground-water resources have been valuable assets for its people and economy, especially the substantial quantities of water available from medium sand and gravel underground aquifers on the county's eastern side. The Sardis Town Pump taps one of these aquifers and has operated continuously since the nineteenth century, playing an important role in the daily life of Sardis residents. About 78 feet deep, it was originally worked by hand pump and was converted to electricity in 1951. It remains the drinking choice for many in the community and across Monroe County, and it is the last of four known public wells that served the village of Sardis.
