Galiuro Wilderness is a 76,317-acre protected area in the Galiuro Mountains of southeastern Arizona, known for its steep, eroded slopes, colorful rock, deep canyons, and peaks rising to 7,671 feet at Bassett Peak. Its varied elevations support plant communities from semi-desert grassland and brush to juniper, pine, fir, and spring-fed riparian trees, sustaining diverse wildlife from pronghorn and bighorn sheep to black bear and cougar. Human history extends from the Jacome Indians to white settlement, mining, and ranching, and includes the 1918 Power's Cabin gunfight. Protected first in 1932, the area reached its present wilderness form and size through later redesignations and expansion.
