Apache Peak is a 13,441-foot mountain on Colorado’s Continental Divide in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, about 21 miles west of Boulder. Straddling Boulder and Grand counties, it is the wilderness’s second-highest summit and Grand County’s third-highest peak. Its sharply rising slopes give it a notably rugged character, with drainage flowing east toward South St. Vrain Creek and west toward Monarch Lake and Lake Granby through Cascade and Arapaho creeks. In its alpine subarctic climate, cold snowy winters, summer thunderstorms, and year-round precipitation sustain Fair Glacier and Isabelle Glacier. Ellsworth Bethel named the peak, and the United States Board on Geographic Names officially adopted the name in 1914.
