Moose River Mountain, a 2,208-foot peak in the Adirondacks west of Old Forge, is chiefly significant as a former fire lookout site. In 1919, a 60-foot Aermotor LS40 steel fire tower was built on its summit to replace an older wooden tower in Lyonsdale after officials determined this location provided a better view. The mountain is believed to have acquired its present name when the tower was moved here. The lookout served in the region’s fire detection system until 1970, as aerial surveillance became more effective. Removed in 1977, the tower’s history reflects the Adirondacks’ transition from staffed mountaintop lookouts to aerial fire detection and wilderness management.
