Great Eastern Divide
Nature
4
At this point atop the Alleghenies lies the Great Eastern Divide, a natural barrier from which water flows to the Atlantic Ocean by way of the Jackson and James rivers and to the Gulf of Mexico via the Greenbrier, New, Kanawha, Ohio, and Mississippi rivers. As part of the Proclamation Line of 1763, it temporarily served to stop further western colonial expansion.
