Peters Mountain is a 52-mile ridge in the central Appalachians spanning Virginia and West Virginia, with parts of its crest forming the state line. Rising to about 4,073 feet, it is known for sandstone outcrops, high mountain bogs on Pine Swamp Ridge, and broad forests of oak, poplar, and hickory. It also supports part of Monroe County’s water supply. The mountain is especially significant as the only known home of Iliamna corei, the Peters Mountain mallow, one of North America’s rarest plants. Named for settler Peter Wright, it is also a major hiking corridor and includes protected wilderness within Jefferson National Forest.
