Sweet Springs Resort
History
1
Sweet Springs Resort in Sweet Springs, West Virginia, developed around a natural warm mineral spring and became an important health and social destination after its founding in 1792. First associated with William Lewis, it briefly also served civic roles before its resort character came to dominate. Early buildings were replaced by a substantial brick hotel completed in 1833, and the resort later attracted prominent national visitors. Though revived after its sale in 1852 and kept open through the Civil War, it declined for lack of railroad access and went bankrupt in 1930. Since then it has served other uses, and restoration efforts now seek to preserve and possibly reopen this notable spring-water landmark.
