Kosmosdale was a company town built around Kentucky’s only Portland cement manufacturer. Philadelphia industrialist Samuel Horner Jr. developed housing in rural Jefferson County for white and black workers of his Kosmos Portland Cement Co. A rail station, post office, churches, a school, and a company store served Kosmos mill workers and river men. A fleet of boats, each with a name beginning with a “K,” towed cement, general freight, and rock quarried by Kosmos in Meade Co. In 1957, after the plant was union organized, the Horner heirs sold the company. Kosmosdale village was razed as the plant was rebuilt in the early 1970s, and many relocated after a 2-year strike against a former owner in 1982.
