Fort William H. Seward was established in 1872 and abandoned in 1877. Under the command of Captain John H. Patterson, two companies of the 7th Cavalry were encamped in this valley for three weeks in the spring of 1876. In the Indian Campaign that followed, these troops were among the victims of the Custer Massacre.
