Salmo-Priest Wilderness is a 41,335-acre protected area in the Selkirk Mountains of northeastern Washington, spanning parts of the Colville and Kaniksu national forests near the Idaho border. Established in 1984 under the Washington Wilderness Act after a 20-year conservation campaign led by Ray Kresek and others, it was favored for protecting the last boreal woodland caribou habitat in the contiguous United States. Its rugged ridges, deep valleys, wet climate, and extensive old-growth forest support diverse plant life and wildlife, including grizzly bears, gray wolves, elk, moose, black bears, and lynx. Major trails cross this large, relatively unbroken backcountry landscape.
