Chloride, a former mining town four miles east, began in 1864 with the discovery of a few mines. By 1900, it had a population of two thousand. Fifty or more mines operated around Chloride, including the Tennessee–Schuykill, a large producer of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc. Its post office had operated continuously from 1873. It is now a small community with a blend of old and new.
