Monte Verita is a 10,140-foot summit in Idaho’s Sawtooth Range, within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area southwest of Stanley. Runoff from its slopes reaches the South Fork Payette River through Baron and Goat Creeks. The mountain is especially striking for its steep local relief, rising more than 1,800 feet above Baron Lake in only half a mile, with granite towers and spires on its upper slopes. It lies in an alpine subarctic climate with long, snowy winters, cool to warm summers, and severe winter cold. Its name, officially adopted in 1960, comes from Daphne du Maurier’s fictional Monte Verità and means “Mount Truth” or “Mountain of Truth.”
