The Chipman House, built in 1828, was the home of Daniel Chipman and Eleutheria Hedge Chipman and is the oldest house in the village. Daniel Chipman was a lawyer, a U.S. Congressman, and a Vermont representative, co-founded Middlebury College, was a partner in the Center Turnpike Company that built the first Ripton road, organized Ripton's first town meeting in 1828, served as Ripton's first postmaster from 1830 to 1850, and was town clerk from 1833 to 1839.
