Church Rock is a solitary sandstone column in southern Utah near Monticello, rising about 200 feet beside U.S. Route 191 on the approach to Canyonlands. Its distinctive three-tiered shape and a rectangular opening in its side fostered a local myth that it had been meant as a church, often linked to Marie Ogden’s nearby Home of Truth community founded in 1933. In fact, the opening was blasted in the late 1940s by rancher Claud Young, who used the rock on his Dry Valley cattle range to store salt licks and feed. The rock’s unusual form, visibility, and folklore have made it a memorable local landmark.
