Lowney Common was graciously donated to the citizens of Mansfield in 1917 by Walter M. Lowney, who lived from 1855 to 1921. An internationally known candy manufacturer, he was the founder and president of the Walter M. Lowney Company. He was exceedingly generous to his employees and took a deep and abiding interest in the affairs of the town.
