Mount Whiteface, a four thousand nineteen-foot peak in New Hampshire’s Sandwich Range, is known for its broad granite ledges, wooded true summit, and long hiking history. The mountain stands beside Mount Tripyramid and Mount Passaconaway near The Bowl, a protected unlogged cirque. Its summit has drawn visitors since the eighteen fifties, with trails added over time, including routes later favored for winter climbing and snowshoeing. A United States Coast Survey signal station was built there in 1871, and poet Lucy Larcom wrote a sonnet after visiting in 1875. The mountain also lies within the Saco River watershed and in the protected Sandwich Range Wilderness.
