Sunrise State Park in East Haddam is a 143-acre public recreation area on the east shore of the Salmon River, sharing an entrance with Machimoodus State Park and managed by Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The property began as Ted Hilton’s Vacation Hide-A-Way in 1916, later operating as the Frank Davis Resort and Sunrise Resort. After the state purchased it in 2009 for $3.2 million, plans to retain it as a meeting and camping destination were abandoned when redevelopment failed. Beginning in 2013, more than 80 deteriorated resort buildings were demolished, and the site shifted toward natural open space for hiking, fishing, and kayaking.
