Born in Millersburg, Mae Street Kidd devoted much of her life to civil rights causes. She served as a representative in the Kentucky state legislature from 1968 to 1985, earning the nickname “Lady of the House.” Kidd led Kentucky's ratification of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the U.S. Constitution, ending slavery and giving citizenship and voting rights to African Americans after they had been in effect for 112 years. She sponsored bills that resulted in laws ensuring equal and open housing for all Kentuckians. She was also the first woman elected secretary of the Democratic caucus. Her honors included the King/Kennedy Award, the NAACP Unsung Heroine Award, and the Louisville Mayor's Citation for Outstanding Community Service. She is buried at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville.
