Confederate First Corps of the Army of the Mississippi, commanded by Maj. Gen. Leonidas Polk, included a First Division under Brig. Gen. Charles Clark and Brig. Gen. Alex P. Stewart and a Second Division under Maj. Gen. Benj. F. Cheatham, with brigades led by officers including Col. R.M. Russell, Brig. Gen. Alex P. Stewart, Brig. Gen. B.R. Johnson, Col. Preston Smith, Col. Wm. H. Stephens, and Col. George Maney. The First Division marched from Corinth on April 3, 1862, following the Third Corps on the Ridge Road to Mickey’s, where it was joined by the Second Division from Bethel. The corps formed the third line in the order of battle and bivouacked there in column of brigades on the night of April 5, 1862. It advanced at 7 o’clock on Sunday morning, but before becoming engaged its brigades were separated and sent to different parts of the field, breaking up the corps and division organizations. Polk moved forward in person on the Pittsburg Road and assumed command of all Confederate troops in that vicinity. Clark accompanied his First Brigade and was wounded at the Rhea House, while Cheatham moved with his Second Brigade and was first engaged at the Hornet’s Nest. Present for duty were 9,404 officers and men, and losses were 385 killed, 1,953 wounded, and 19 missing, for a total of 2,357.
