Ashworth is a prehistoric village site in southwestern Indiana near the Ohio and Wabash rivers, in a landscape long favored for travel, settlement, and Native occupation. Posey County contains an unusually dense concentration of archaeological remains, and a 1949 survey found fifteen prehistoric villages in Point Township alone. Ashworth drew close study in the 1940s as archaeologists hurried to record riverside sites threatened by a proposed levee. Surface finds included stone tools, pottery, human bone, and animal bone, and a partly exposed grave held three individuals. Pottery and related evidence identified Ashworth as a Mississippian Native village, now associated with the Caborn-Welborn culture. In 1985, about 50 acres were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
