Black Butte
Nature
Black Butte is a mountain butte in California’s Northern Coast Ranges and the highest point in Glenn County at 7,455 feet. Located in the Mendocino National Forest between Mendocino Pass and the Black Butte River, it is shaped by its high elevation and surrounding plateau, which bring heavy winter snowfall and low average annual temperatures. The mountain rises steeply above a nearby river valley at about 2,800 feet, though its overall prominence is lessened by neighboring Plaskett Meadows at about 6,500 feet. US Forest Highway 7 passes north of the mountain, linking parts of State Route 162, but winter snowfall closes the road and adds to Black Butte’s isolation.
