Big Jay is a 3,786-foot mountain in Vermont’s northern Green Mountains on the border of Franklin and Orleans counties, and it is the highest point in Franklin County. Closely associated with Little Jay and Jay Peak, it is usually considered part of the Jay Peak massif rather than a separate destination. Its slopes drain through several brooks into the Trout River watershed, with waters eventually reaching Lake Champlain and the Saint Lawrence system. Although there is no official hiking trail, a herd path from Jay Peak reaches the summit. In 2007, illegal cutting of a ski trail damaged protected habitat on the mountain’s eastern side and left a visible scar.
