Pocumtuck Mountain is a distinct peak in Charlemont, Massachusetts, west of the abandoned settlement of Catamount, with summit ledges that offer sweeping views across western Franklin County and into northern Berkshire County. It received its name on October 16, 1855, during one of Catamount’s Old Homes Days festivals, when it was named for the Pocumtuc Indians. In the nineteenth century, the mountain hosted repeated scenic gatherings, including one attended by Massachusetts governor John Davis Long. Although often mistaken for the better-known Pocumtuck Range in Deerfield and Greenfield, it is a separate mountain. Much of the ledges and surrounding land is now privately owned, and trespassing is forbidden.
