Tollgate House
Transportation
1
The Tollgate House was one of the last to operate in Kentucky. There were 13 toll houses, spaced 5 miles apart and at the edge of each town, along the Maysville to Lexington Road. The Maysville, Washington, Paris and Lexington Turnpike Co. built the road from 1829 to 1835 and owned the toll houses. In the late 1890s, the tollgate war raged against the system until the counties bought the turnpikes. Most gates had been abolished by 1900.
