Phelps Mountain, a 4,161-foot summit in North Elba, New York, is the 32nd-highest Adirondack High Peak and an established part of the region’s hiking culture. It was named for Adirondack guide Orson Schofield Phelps, known as Old Mountain Phelps, who cut routes to area peaks and helped fix some of their names. Verplanck Colvin first used Phelps’s name in 1870 for a spur of Mount Marcy, and by 1886 it had shifted to this peak. Charles Wood made the first recorded ascent in June 1904, when the mountain was owned and logged by the J. & J. Rogers Company. Today it is a popular trail destination with broad views of Mount Marcy.
