Tyler County soldiers participated in the War Between the States from 1861-1865, a conflict that resulted in the birth of the state of West Virginia. Civil War battles fought in West Virginia included Philippi, Hoke's Run, Rich Mt., Kessler's Cross Lanes, Carnifex Ferry, Cheat Mt., Greenbrier River, Allegheny Mt., Princeton Courthouse, Harpers Ferry, Sheperdstown, Greenland Gap, Moorefield, Summit Pt., and Smithfield Crossing. Among Medal of Honor winners were Daniel A. Woods of WV 1 Cav, who at Sailors Creek, Virginia, on April 6, 1865, captured the flag of 18FL Inf; George Moore of WV 11 Inf Reg Co. D, at Fishers Hill, Virginia, on September 22, 1864; and Joseph Kimble of WV 2 Cav, who at Sailors Creek, Virginia, on April 6, 1865, captured the flag of NC 6 Inf. Doctors included Dr. James L. Gillespie of WV 14 Inf Reg Co. E, Dr. S.M. Devore of IN 43 Reg Co. H, and Dr. Samuel Mayfield of WV 15 Inf Reg Co. I, and pastors included Rev. T.H. Bunting of WV Inf.
