Swiftcurrent Mountain rises 8,440 feet in the Lewis Range of Glacier National Park in Montana, standing on the Continental Divide and crowned by the historic Swiftcurrent Fire Lookout. Its high elevation and exposure create a severe alpine subarctic environment with long, snowy winters and cool to warm summers. Geologically, the mountain is made of sedimentary rock deposited in shallow seas from the Precambrian through the Jurassic, then reshaped by the Lewis Overthrust beginning about 170 million years ago, when a vast slab of older rock was thrust over younger Cretaceous rock. It remains important both as part of the park’s dramatic landscape and its fire observation history.
