Baldy Mountain, the highest summit in the Cimarron Range of New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains, rises steeply above Moreno Valley near Eagle Nest and is closely connected to Philmont Scout Ranch. In 1963, Norton Clapp bought 10,098 acres around the mountain and gave them to Scouting America. The peak also has a deep mining history: prospectors began seeking copper, gold, and silver there in 1866, the summit became the Mystic Lode copper mine, and nearby workings included the Aztec, French Henry, and Bull-of-the-Woods mines. About 70 miles of underground mines extend through the mountain, and Baldy Town on its east side endured from 1868 to 1941.
