Holy Cross Wilderness is a federally protected mountain wilderness in central Colorado spanning the White River and San Isabel national forests near several communities. Established in 1980, it encompasses 122,797 acres and about 164 miles of trails. The area is named for Mount of the Holy Cross, its highest peak, whose cross-shaped snowfield has drawn visitors for generations and can be clearly seen from Notch Mountain. Its trails lead to lakes, passes, and alpine basins, making it a popular destination for hikers and backpackers. The wilderness is also known for difficult conditions, with weather, terrain, and remoteness requiring careful preparation.
