Squak Mountain is a forested mountain in the Issaquah Alps between Cougar and Tiger mountains, known for its protected woods, Indigenous place-names, and role in the region’s early coal industry. Its English name derives from a Lushootseed placename that also influenced Issaquah Creek and the city of Issaquah. Coal discovered there in 1859 helped lead to early commercial mining in Issaquah and Renton, though mining later ended and abandoned mines contributed to the land’s preservation. Most of the mountain is now protected in Squak Mountain State Park, created in 1972 and later expanded, preserving a secluded urban wilderness near growing suburbs.
