Middletown Village was the oldest settlement in New Jersey, the site of the old Indian village of Chaquasitt. It was settled by the Dutch in 1613, and an English land claim was recorded in 1664. It was a haven for Captain Kidd's pirates, the scene of conflict between Tories and Patriots, and the place where Clinton and Cornwallis met the day after the Battle of Monmouth.
