Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson was born on 21 Jan. 1824 and died on 10 May 1863. He graduated from West Point U.S. Military Academy in 1846, was breveted major for gallantry in the Mexican War, and served here at Fort Meade with Company E, 1st U.S. Artillery as a 1st lieutenant from Dec. 1850 through May 1851. He resigned his commission to become a professor at Virginia Military Institute, entered Confederate service in 1861 at the outbreak of the War Between the States, and became commander of the 2d Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A. He was acclaimed for his actions at First Manassas, the Shenandoah Valley campaign, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. Jackson died at Guiney's Station, Virginia, of pneumonia and complications resulting from wounds received during the Battle of Chancellorsville. His last words were, "Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees."
