Hillsboro honored local service members who died in the world wars. In World War I, Orel A. Smith, born 1898, of the 32nd Co. 6th Marine Vol., was killed in action on Nov. 2, 1918; Lieut. W. E. G. Cooper, born March 29, 1888, was killed in action at Chateau Thierry on July 20, 1918; Claude L. Wilkinson, born June 9, 1893, was killed in action at Verdun Sector on April 20, 1918; John F. Conner, born Dec. 1, 1890, died in France on Oct. 28, 1918; and Harry Robert Williams, born April 1, 1897, died from wounds in Battle of Verdun Sector on April 2, 1918. In World War II, the dead included Billy L. Krug, U. S. Army, 1924 - 1944; Edward S. Kay, U. S. Navy, 1920 - 1943; Dale R. Cooper, U. S. Navy, 1920 - 1943; James L. Crane, U. S. Navy, 1922 - 1944; Vernon E. Haniford, U. S. Army, 1922 - 1944; and Russell Harshbarger, U. S. Army, 1919 - 1942.
