Shades State Park in western Indiana preserves rugged creek valleys, steep sandstone cliffs, small waterfalls, and deep canyons along Sugar Creek and Indian Creek, including landmarks such as Silver Cascade, Lover’s Leap, and the Devil’s Backbone in Pine Hills Nature Preserve. The area was once a late nineteenth-century resort, then was protected in the nineteen thirties by Joseph Frisz and transferred to the state in 1947, becoming Indiana’s fifteenth state park. Pine Hills was later recognized as a National Natural Landmark. The park also reflects ancient geologic history, with sandstone formed under an ocean and fossils still found nearby, and it preserves traces of a former small airfield.
