Brownfield honored its sons who upheld the flag from 1861 to 1865, naming Colonel Augustus A. Gibson of the 3d Artillery U.S.A.; Maj. Sylvanus B. Bean; Maj. Eli B. Bean of the A.O.M. Volunteers; and many other men who served in units including the 3d, 5th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 17th, 20th, 23rd, and 29th Maine Infantry, the 3d and 4th Maine Batteries, the 7th California Infantry, the 5th U.S.C. Cavalry, the U.S.A., the U.S.N., and New Hampshire and Massachusetts regiments.
