Built in 1906 over Buffalo Creek in Long Grove, this narrow steel Pratt pony truss bridge is one of the few surviving bridges of its type in the Chicago area and in Illinois. Though often regarded as a covered bridge, its wooden cover was added in 1972, influenced by village leader and architect Robert Parker Coffin, to discourage oversized vehicles and give it a distinctive appearance. Residents helped preserve the aging span rather than replace it, contributing to its 2018 listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Restored after a damaging 2018 crash, it was renamed in Coffin’s honor in 2022 and remains a symbol of Long Grove’s historic character.
