Wauconda Bog Nature Preserve in Wauconda, Illinois, is a 67-acre tamarack bog and a notable protected wetland in the Chicago area. Formed by the Wisconsin glaciation, it preserves deep peat layers whose pollen records have helped document postglacial climate change in central North America and the resulting shifts in plant life. Geomorphologists often compare it with nearby Volo Bog because the two illustrate different stages of bog development. Unlike Volo Bog, Wauconda Bog has no open water and instead supports wet peat vegetation such as tamarack, cattails, wetland orchids, yellow birch, and poison sumac. It became an Illinois Nature Preserve in 1970 and a National Natural Landmark in 1972.
