United Airlines Flight 175, a Boeing 767, took off at 8:15 a.m. from Boston's Logan International Airport en route to Los Angeles with 65 people on board. At 9:03 a.m., it crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center between floors 75 and 85, killing all on board. At 9:59 a.m., the South Tower collapsed. In all, 2,606 people perished in the collapse of the two towers, including 343 members of the fire service and 71 members of law enforcement. The names of all that day's victims are on a wall at the southwest border of the memorial, along with the Maltese Cross and a police shield in honor of those first responders who helped ensure that over 10,000 more survived in one of the largest and most successful rescue missions in history.
