Built in 1790 of two-foot blue ash logs as a home by Daniel Matheny, this site became the place where Reverend Caleb Jarvis Taylor organized the Mt. Gilead Methodist Society with Jacob Leer as class leader. Taylor was the author of revival hymns. Members were not allowed to buy slaves except to free them when their labor repaid the cost. After the church closed, the lot was deeded for a perpetual cemetery in 1878.
