Fort Bigham stood 58 rods northwest on its marked site, having been erected in 1754 by pioneer settlers. Indians captured and burned it on June 11, 1756, and the twenty or more people in the fort were massacred or carried away. It was rebuilt in 1760 and destroyed again by Indians in 1766, but the inhabitants escaped after being warned by a friendly Indian.
