Constructed in 1848, the Old Marengo County Courthouse served as the seat of county government until 1903. On October 9, 1890, Rube Burrows, the nation’s most notorious train robber, was slain there by Sheriff Jefferson D. Carter. From 1903 to 1915 it housed Linden Public School, from 1915 to 1947 Linden Baptist Church, and from 1947 to 1973 the VFW-American Legion Hall. From 1964 to 1969, the second floor was used as a Youth Center. On January 18, 1974, it was placed on the National Register of Historical Sites.
