The Cobre Valley Center for the Arts is housed in the Old Gila County Courthouse, an imposing structure built in 1905 by stone masons who had been working on Roosevelt Dam and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is dedicated to George W. P. Hunt, Globe's first mayor and Arizona's first governor. After the courthouse stood vacant from 1976 to 1984, the Cobre Valley Fine Arts Guild began a full-scale restoration. Today the building contains a diverse assemblage of fine arts and crafts, with the lower level shared by the Hand Weaving Studio and Copper County Camera Club, the main floor occupied by the Fine Arts Guild with stained glass, ceramics, paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and a gift shop, and the old county courtroom on the third floor converted by the Copper Cities Community Players into a theatre for productions throughout the year. Its restoration was achieved solely through thousands of volunteer hours, and community support continues through donations from fine arts patrons.
