Barbours Creek-Shawvers Run Cluster is a protected mountain landscape in western Virginia’s Jefferson National Forest, uniting the Barbours Creek and Shawvers Run wildernesses with nearby wildlands such as Hoop Hole, Potts Arm, and Toms Knob. Covering more than 25,000 acres, it is valued for remote backcountry, trout streams, wildlife habitat, and broad ridge-top views. Its terrain reflects Ridge and Valley geology, with hard rock-capped ridges above valleys shaped from softer shales and limestones. Within the James River drainage, it also supports important Appalachian oak forests that provide food, cover, and denning habitat for black bears after chestnut blight largely eliminated American chestnut.
