American Peak is a 13,806-foot summit in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, northeast of Silverton and just west of the Continental Divide. Ranked the state’s 102nd-highest peak, it is especially notable for its steep rise, climbing about 2,800 feet above Snare Creek in roughly 1.5 miles on its south side. Nearby are Handies Peak and Jones Mountain. The name American Peak was officially adopted in 2005 by the United States Board on Geographic Names, drawing on nearby American Basin and honoring American spirit and heritage. In an alpine subarctic climate, the mountain has snowy winters, cool to warm summers, year-round precipitation, and runoff that feeds tributaries of the Gunnison River.
