Byers Canyon is a short gorge on the upper Colorado River in Grand County, Colorado, in the river’s headwaters between Hot Sulphur Springs and Kremmling. Roughly 8 miles long, it is one of the tighter and more dramatic stretches of this section of the Colorado. The river shapes the canyon, which also functions as an important transportation corridor through the valley, carrying U.S. Highway 40 and the Union Pacific Railroad’s Moffat Route. The canyon also includes the Byers Canyon Shooting Range and forms part of the Hot Sulphur Springs State Wildlife Area, which provides winter foraging habitat for big game animals.
