Massasoit State Park is a public recreation area on the southeast side of Taunton, with part of its land extending into Lakeville. Its more than 1,200 wooded acres include forest, cranberry bogs, and six lakes and ponds, among them Lake Rico, Furnace Pond, and Big Bearhole Pond. The park supports walking, hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, boating, fishing, and limited hunting. A lightning strike in 2008 damaged the underground electric system and closed much of the park. Interior areas reopened to vehicles in 2015, and the park fully reopened in 2018.
