In the early 1900s, Cambridge Junction continued to grow, and by 1905 more than a dozen new dwellings stood where this area is today, with several still surviving, including the old school house converted into a home. The community included Roscoe Fuller's store, livery, and farm, Willey Bros.' cattle holding pens beside the New England Dairy creamery, a large icehouse at the end of the creamery building, and a hotel that served traveling salesmen and railroad employees. The Cambridge Junction post office operated in the former Ralph Bourne store until it was discontinued on July 31, 1958. The rail line struggled through much of its history, changing hands between the St. Johnsbury and Lake Champlain Line and the Boston and Lowell through the 1800s, continuing through the 1920s, the devastating flood of 1927, and the 1930s decline in passenger use as automobiles became more common. By 1944 the line was $3,000,000 in debt, but after bankruptcy it emerged in 1948 as a restructured St. Johnsbury and Lake Champlain line that began modernizing with new diesel engines. In 1967 Sam Pinsly purchased the railroad, and to further modernization most covered bridges were removed for larger diesel engines, leaving only the Fisher Bridge as the remaining covered rail bridge. The State of Vermont bought the railway in 1973, and after operation by several companies it became the Lamoille Valley Railroad in 1978, continuing in limited use through the 1980s until operations ceased in 1994. The rail era also saw major disasters, including a fire on January 26, 1922, apparently caused by an overheated furnace, when extreme cold hampered a bucket brigade from the nearby Lamoille River and only the waiting room, ticket office, post office, and freight house were saved along with some important papers, and the flood of 1927, when heavy rain from the night of November 2 until noon on November 4 dropped 6 to 8 inches in three days.
