Mount Langley is a prominent high peak on the Sierra Nevada crest in eastern California, between Owens Valley and Kern River Valley. It is California’s ninth-highest peak, the range’s seventh-highest, and the southernmost fourteener in the United States. Early Sierra explorers confused it with Mount Whitney in the early 1870s, and the mountain later carried several names before Mount Langley, honoring Samuel Pierpont Langley, became official in 1943. Clarence King and Paul Pinson made the first recorded ascent in 1871. Though often considered one of California’s more accessible fourteeners, its elevation, seasonal snow, and winter road closures still make reaching the summit a serious undertaking.
