Jericho Mountain, a 2,454-foot peak within Berlin, New Hampshire, has long been a prominent local landmark and is still widely known as Black Mountain. Its older names preserve both Abenaki and local history: the Abenaki name Miccasadenauk meant “mountain with a black summit,” and the English name likely referred to repeated forest fires that blackened the summit, with the last major fire recorded in 1903. To avoid confusion with other Black Mountains in the White Mountain National Forest, federal officials adopted the name Jericho Mountain in 1936, drawing it from Jericho Brook. The mountain later became an early New Hampshire wind-power site, first in 2006 and again with larger turbines in 2014.
